Euro 2012: Most Students will be supporting England but betting on Germany

With the English football season having reached a tense and tantalising climax, student football fans are now turning their attention to the international stage in anticipation of the Euro 2012 tournament due to kick-off next month.

After the roller-coaster ride of a season culminating in Manchester City’s first Premier League title in 44 years, in addition to the Sheffield showdown that led up to the League 1 play-offs, football fans on The Student Room are riding the adrenaline wave straight to the Euro 2012 tournament set to start on the 8th June.

‘I hope that most will be supporting England :)

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the majority of respondents in the thread which polled ‘Who will you be supporting at Euro 2012?‘ pledged their allegiance to St. George’s cross (for full poll results see below).

‘Obviously England, I’m English and I’ve lived in England all my life so it would be rude not to.’

  • England 55.70%
  • Republic of Ireland 8.86%

‘England of course!’

‘England and Ireland, same as most people.’

‘england and ireland. if they get knocked out, i’ll just support the underdogs.’

Nonetheless, the majority only stands at 56% with many also expressing support for Ireland. The rest of the votes are spread out among several of the other nations.

‘Republic of Ireland, my dad got me into football young and he’s Irish so I was brought up supporting Ireland. When we get knocked out, England. After that; likely to be a neutral.’

Support for the other contenders in the tournament is founded on family connections, nostalgia, and biases towards favourite European players playing in teams in the English leagues.

‘France. Cabaye, Ben Arfa and Debuchy (hopefully) being the reasons.’

‘France. The whole Arsenal team is basically French. Jk. I’ll support England of course.’

‘England, although I’m half French. My Dad will be supporting France though, and we’re going to watch the England vs. France game together…’

  • France 1.27%

In particular there is a lot of support for Spain, the current World Cup holders, the Netherlands, who were runners-up to Spain in that final, and Germany, who ended England’s World Cup hopes in the first knock-out stage of the 2010 tournament.

  • Spain 8.86%
  • Germany 6.33%
  • Netherlands 3.80%

‘I’ve been partial to Netherlands and Germany for many years now, so probably them!’

‘Spain! But I was born in Spain and have been supporting Spain for as long as I can remember’

‘Germany as I was brought up there for the first 10 years of my life (no glory supporter) but I also want England to do well’

  • Poland 2.53%
  • Italy 2.53%
  • Sweden 1.27%

‘I’m not really following any team, but I’d like to see Poland and Sweden do well.’

‘I won’t pay much attention but I’d like to see Italy win it, always had a soft spot for their game growing up in the 90s watching Football Italia!’

Other posts are just excited about the prospect of high quality of football to be played in the course of the tournament without the emotional turmoil that comes with backing a particular team.

‘No one there for me to support since Scotland missed out again :( So I’ll be neutral and hopefully enjoy a lot of good games.’

Among would-be England supporters there are, however, mixed feelings towards the national team based on personal preferences and  towards the players rather than patriotism.

‘I find it hard to support England seeing as I dislike many of the players, I mean I spend some time all year slagging some of them off ahaha. Not that I don’t want them to do well though.’

‘Yeah tbh I hate a lot of them but I just put that to a side when they’re playing for England. But if we lose… It’s John Terry’s fault’

Furthermore, there is a general sense of foreboding about the team’s predicted performance and stamina in the competition, from even before the squad was announced. Subsequently, some students intend to substitute in a second team to support plan in the event that England fall foul in the early rounds.

‘England, but once we get knocked out, Spain.’

‘I’ll support England until they get knocked out which will probably be fairly instantaneous so after that I’ll probably support Germany.’

Another of the many threads started in the run-up to the tournament has a poll gauging early predictions about ‘Who will win Euro 2012?‘. Initial responses favoured Germany as the most likely winner with 48%, followed by Spain with 16%, then England  with 12% of the votes.
