HR assistant job

The Student Room Group are looking for an HR & operations assistant to help support our fantastic team based in the heart of Brighton.

Working alongside our HR Manager, you will take responsibility for keeping the HR function running smoothly and successfully. We think it’s important to offer a great working environment to every one of our 70 employees, so we want you to play a key part in helping us to do just that.

Key role responsibilities:


  • Monitor and respond to email enquiries received in the HR inbox
  • Track candidates through the recruitment process
  • Organise and attend interviews
  • Build and maintain good working relationships with recruitment agencies
  • Arrange psychometric assessments and offer support and guidance to candidates on how to complete them effectively
  • Provide useful feedback (verbally and in writing) to unsuccessful candidates


  • Set up offer letters, contracts, references and all other new starter documentation
  • Welcome all new starters by offering advice and helping to answer their queries
  • Arrange induction sessions (including HR) with all new employees
  • Ensure probationary periods are carefully managed and clear outcomes attained

Learning & development:

  • Help to source and book suitable external and in-house training courses
  • Keep track of training records for reporting purposes

Payroll & reporting:

  • Collate information relating to monthly payroll and input into Sage 50 payroll
  • Produce ad-hoc reports on HR statistics

HR administration tasks:

  • Keep all employee data up to date using the PeopleHR system
  • Deal with day-to-day employee queries, including absence & company policies
  • Understand TSR’s benefit schemes including Scottish Widows pension scheme, private healthcare, life insurance, Ride to Work scheme, kiddivouchers, flexible working etc.
  • Process and renew DBS checks for employees, temps and contractors
  • Take responsibility for HR projects. This may include projects relating to employee engagement or system improvement such as recruitment automation.
  • Understand and offer support with our 7Geese OKR system which includes tracking objectives, one to one management and employee recognition

Operational support:

  • Provide admin support to Chief Operating Officer as and when required. This may include document preparation, reporting and expenses
  • Help with organising company events

Knowledge and experience we are looking for:

  • Previous experience of working in an HR related role
  • Basic employment law knowledge (as a minimum)
  • Solid technical experience using online systems/databases, but also Microsoft packages
  • A degree (or equivalent) is desirable, but not essential
