Each year we survey thousands of students to discover their perceptions of the options available to them after school, college or university to give you a unique insight into their decision-making journey.

This year we’ve had the biggest ever response with over 11,000 UK students aged 16 and above taking part in an online survey, making this the largest student research report TSR has ever undertaken.

Download Options 2017 todayThe report looks at the motivations behind students’ choices, the usefulness of information to support their decision-making journeys and how they feel during this important transformation process.

This year we’ve added even more questions to examine student perceptions on current Higher Education and pathway topics including STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), fast-track degrees and the world of work.

Key insights include:

  • 81% of students are most likely to choose university immediately after finishing school or college
  • STEM is a popular subject choice, but further work still needs to be done to engage more female students
  • Increasing tuition fees and student debt remain key barriers for students choosing not to go to university
  • Although the male-dominated perception of apprenticeships still persists, the views of respondents this year appeared to have shifted towards a more gender-neutral stance
  • More male students said they expected clear progression paths in their first full-time job, compared to female students

These are just some of the significant takeaways from this year’s report, which showcases key findings from a range of themes including: Satisfaction with University, Widening Access and Participation, Apprenticeships and more.
