The Student Room is one of the UK’s leading youth communities, with 6.5 million visitors a month and winner of Lovie and Ed Tech awards for Best Youth Site and innovation in social learning. We want every student in the UK to use our community frequently and be given more reasons to post in our forums.The Student Room (TSR), are looking for a designer that can bring something special to our production team. The purpose of the role is to enhance student satisfaction and engagement by improving the usability, ease of use and enjoyment of the TSR website.

TSR sites have high-traffic, with over a million page views a day, so it’s a chance to really make a difference.

Key role responsibilities:

Working with the rest of our fantastic production team you will:

  • Ensure that all future developments of the TSR website are built around the needs of the user, design consistency and the best UX and UI principles
  • Deliver the full UX and UI design process including
    • Understanding business and user needs
    • Wireframing, prototyping and user testing
    • Project planning
    • Production and iteration of front end designs
    • Post launch analysis and improvement
    • Liaising with all key stakeholders throughout the process
  • Champion effective UX and UI design across the whole of TSR
  • Help to support and develop our junior designer

Knowledge and experience we are looking for:

We are looking for a designer who has the knowledge and skills below:

  • A strong track record of designing and implementing high quality UX and UI designs across a range of high traffic consumer websites (ideally social or forum-based)
  • Fluency with visual and interaction design tools
  • Ability to develop a strong understanding of user needs
  • Expert understanding of HTML, CSS, and responsive design. Basic understanding of JavaScript or a similar web programming language
  • Excellent communication skills and able to champion their creative vision to both business stakeholders and the production team
  • Experience of usability testing, A/B testing, and other testing methodologies
  • Experience of working within agile/scrum production processes
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines in an exciting and fast paced environment with minimal oversight
  • Ability to code HTML/CSS would be highly advantageous, but is not essential

  • Ability to embrace and adapt to change with a proactive attitude to solving problems
  • Ability to work under pressure, to tight deadlines and deliver
  • Confidence to work independently under your own initiative with the proven ability to own a project or task
  • Degree (or equivalent) educated is desirable, but not essential
